Greetings, fellow thepians!!  I was wondering if I could get some advice.

Our fall musical is "The Secret Garden" and I am in the process of preparing for the auditions.  I would love to be Martha, but I'm preparing for all of the female roles.  (Her accent is really challenging, but a lot of fun.)  Martha is a very optimistic, perky maid (late teens - early twenties) who befriends the spoiled Mary.

For the musical portion of our audition, we are asked to prepare 16 bars of a song (not from the show) that we can act.  I'd like to choose a Broadway standard (but not a signature piece), since that is what the musical director prefers for auditions.  While I am a pretty defined alto, I can sing in a mezzo soprano range, like Martha.  Her songs in the show go to a high D, which is right about where I am comfortable.  (Thankfully, her songs also have a lot of lower alto notes, which I much more comfortable with.  Most of our theatre females are sopranos.)

So, I'm looking for suggestions for songs that I could sing.  Again, I'm hoping for a Broadway standard (but not a signature piece) that is in the range of an alto or a low mezzo soprano.  Ideally, something that could possibly relate to Martha's characteristics.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks a lot!!
